Size, weight and lifespan: the published numbers
Buyers often ask how big and how long. Here is what published sources say, and why the figures vary.

Height and weight
| Sex | Height at the withers | Typical weight |
|---|---|---|
| Male | 24 to 26 in (60 to 65 cm) | 66 to 88 lb (30 to 40 kg) |
| Female | 22 to 24 in (55 to 60 cm) | 49 to 71 lb (22 to 32 kg) |
These are Wikipedia's figures. It points out that the AKC standard sets no weight range, so a dog outside the table is not necessarily wrong, and weight alone tells you little about quality.
Lifespan
Wikipedia says overall lifespan is about 10 years, below the average for all dogs in several studies, and cites a 2024 UK study with a mean of 11.3 years against 12.7 for purebreds on average. Lifespan is also affected by the health conditions on the previous chapter.
Planning around the numbers
- Budget for a decade of care, not a few years.
- Expect a dog at full size well before it is fully mature mentally.
- Plan for veterinary costs that rise with age, especially for joints.
Armed with numbers, move on to the buying checklist.
